Unite the UK´s largest Union needs to be reminded that the Ghurkhas have earned 26 Victoria Crosses and have paraded at Remembrance Sunday.

Gibraltar Senior Citizens Association Newsletter

Mail order.
Senior citizens will no doubt recall that some time back we tried to make it possible for disabled and or handicapped persons to import directly from a mail order firm in the UK specialising in specially designed aids. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to do so as this firm was adamant that they would not export to Gibraltar.

We are now pleased to say that we have now had an offer by a well known establishment in Gibraltar who will try to import these aids as they do with other goods from a well known cash and carry firm in the UK. We naturally look forward to hearing from them in due course and should it be possible to import, we shall be advising senior citizens with all relevant details via our newsletters in the usual way.

Special prices
Hoping and in anticipation that works at Albert Risso House and flats purchased by senior citizens at Waterport Terraces will soon be completed, the association has already made arrangement with two removal firms, namely Bishop's Move and Redwood International who have kindly agreed to offer special prices and services for senior citizens who will eventually move to these complexes. Not having had a reply from other removal firms we also contacted via e mail, we naturally assume they are not interested in providing this service.

Though there is great similarity in the services both firms named above provide, each has a different system when costing and subsequently offering quotes. Seniors intending to use these services from either of these two firms are advised to obtain quotes from the two and then decide which if any they will engage and sign contracts with.

And included in our comments on special prices, we are pleased to inform senior citizens and very grateful indeed that Pizza Hut has increased its concession by 10% to 20%. We are confident that our updated special prices and discounts list will be ready for printing within a week or two.

Mobility scooters.
Some months back we met with the Hon. J. Holliday, Minister for Enterprise, Development, Technology and Transport to discuss the lack of regulation and control over the sale and use of mobility scooters. The association was concerned that as the law stood, among other things, any young person could buy and ride these vehicles on the main highway or wherever he/she chose without any control whatsoever.

We are now pleased to say that Government has taken on board our suggestions and provided us with proposed legislation for our perusal and possible comments. We have gone back to Government with a couple of additions we would like given consideration and await their comments.

Royal Gibraltar Police.
For the fourth consecutive year we were pleased to accept the invitation by the Royal Gibraltar Police to address the year's recruits on the GSCA and on issues affecting senior citizens in Gibraltar.

After a brief account of the history and activities of the association, we were favourably impressed by the far reaching questions asked by the recruits proving the high standard in education and calibre of the students. All augurs well for the Force.
