The Gibraltar Society for Cancer Relief will be holding its annual flag day this Friday. The Society invites everyone to contribute generously as ever to this, the Society's main fundraising event.
Many people in Gibraltar have been affected by cancer either directly, through a relative who has cancer or a friend or work colleague. During the past twenty six years, the Society has been providing support to people living with cancer in Gibraltar. Since the early days when our day care and respite care services started at the Lady Williams Cancer Care Centre, other services have been developed. There is a resource library of patient information for patients and their loved ones in the Centre and financial assistance is available to those going through financial hardship as a result of their illness. The Centre offers complementary therapies, such as aromatherapy and in partnership with the GHA, the Society offers specialist nursing care and a Hospice at Home nursing service to care for people with advanced cancer in their homes.
Next year, the Society hopes to move its services from the present Centre to a new location thanks to the Government of Gibraltar's decision to relocate the Centre to the former BFBS building in South Barracks Road. This building will be refurbished according to the specifications as agreed between the Government and the Society. The new Centre will also be used by the other five cancer charities in Gibraltar.
In the meantime, the Society hopes to raise well over £5000 to help fund our services and so a number of our volunteers will be out and about in town seeking your donations. All the money raised is used solely in Gibraltar.
Commenting on the Flag Day, the Society's Chairperson Marisa Desoiza said: "Sadly cancer has touched most people in Gibraltar at one time or another. Our work is to help relieve suffering when people become ill. We know that the support we give to those who have cancer and to their families can be of great benefit to those affected by this illness. People in Gibraltar have been extremely generous in the past and we are sure that they will continue to be just as bighearted this year".
