Whilst Police officers were patrolling in the area of Rosia Road they saw a Spanish registered moped being ridden by two men. The officers' attention was drawn to the fact that although heavily laden, the moped's tyres showed little or no deformation. This did not seem consistent with the weight being carried and the riders were requested to stop at Boyd Street. They initially denied anything was untoward, but after the officers' observations were pointed out to them they admitted that they had packets of cigarettes concealed within each of the tyres.

A total of 60 packets of Winston cigarettes were found concealed in each tyre (120 packets = 2400 cigarettes). A further 2 cartons of Winston cigarettes were found beneath the seat. (Grand total - 2800 cigarettes).

As a result of further enquiries it was ascertained that they were using a local address as a base to dismantler the tyres and conceal the tobacco. A search warrant was executed at this residence and 2x electric air compressors, a spare set of wheels and an assortment of tools were seized at the residence. All the seized equipment was used in the process of concealing the cigarettes in the tyres, refitting the tyres onto the wheel rims and then fitting these to the motorcycle.

The men two Spanish Nationals were arrested for possession and transportation of a commercial quantity of cigarettes. Both are currently on Police bail.
