RICHARD IS ARMY CHAMPION

At the Army’s Athletics Championships at Tidworth, Lance Corporal Richard Blagg won the 1500 metres and he came second in the 800 metres race. Richard was the only athlete from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment to take part at the championships.

In the 800 metres event, Richard was overtaken in the last few metres by last year’s winner, Sgt Mike Aubu of the Royal Logistics Corps. Richard’s time of 1 minute 58.05 seconds was 0.5 seconds behind that of Aubu but it was his personal best.

Less than an hour later, the Gibraltarian athlete was back on track for the 1500 metres event – a race in which he came 4th last year. ‘I didn’t think I was going to do very well as it was so soon after the 800 metres but we started at a good pace,’ said Richard. ‘At the bell, I decided to push on and no-one followed me. It felt good to beat two of the three guys who beat me last year.’

Richard now goes on to represent the Army at the Inter-Services event which will be held at Tidworth next month.
