The Command Warrant Officer, WO1 Andy Deacon has presented a cheque for £600 to Momy Levy, Chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL). The money was raised by the Warrant Officers and Senior Rates Mess at Devil's Tower Camp.
'Most of the money was raised on an evening when we invited the officers to a Games Night at our Mess,' said Andy. 'Strangely enough, the officers lost just about every game and they had to pay a forfeit each time.'
The Gibraltar branch of the RBL was formed in the 1920s and it raises about £5000 each year, mainly from the sale of Remembrance Day poppies and wreaths. The branch sends about half of this amount to UK whilst half is retained for local needs. 'This year we sent an extra £500 to UK but I stipulated that it was only to be used for Afghanistan casualties,' said Momy. 'I hope that, when Remembrance Day comes around this year, we are able to collect even more money to be used for Afghanistan casualties.'
There are some very deserving cases much nearer home. 'We know of at least one Gibraltar Regiment widow who has fallen on hard times and so we use our funds to pay for her telephone bill, water bill, electricity bill and other basic needs.'
'If anyone knows of any ex-Gibraltar Regiment servicemen or the widow of a Regiment soldier, they should give me a call - in strict confidence,' added Momy. We are always pleased to help a deserving cause.'
